The maxillary sinus lift is a bone regeneration operation that is needed when, in the posterior sectors of the upper arch, the available bone under the sinus is not sufficient to accommodate an implant. By lifting the sinus membrane and inserting graft material, we create the necessary bone thickness. We plan it on the 3D Cone Beam CT included in the first visit and, when conditions allow, we insert the implants in the same surgical session.

When it really matters
After the loss of the upper molars, the bone is resorbed and the maxillary sinus tends to expand downwards: the residual height can fall below the millimeters necessary to stabilize an implant. It's not your feeling or our opinion: we measure it in millimeters on the 3D CT scan. If the bone height is sufficient, the operation is not necessary and we do not propose it.
The two techniques
- Crestal elevation: accessed through the implant site, for moderate deficits; often the implant is inserted in the same session
- Raised room with side window: for significant deficits, a small bony window is opened on the sinus wall and filled with graft material; the implants are inserted immediately if stability allows it, or after healing
The choice of technique depends on the millimeters of residual bone and we justify it in the written plan signed by the surgeon.
Healing times and insertion of implants
With the ridge rise theplant it is often contemporary. With the lateral window and major graft, we typically wait 4-6 months for the graft to transform into viable bone before loading. The precise timetable — how many days in Tirana, how many trips — is in the written quote you receive within 24 hours of the first visit.
The post-operative course
Swelling for a few days is normal. The main rules: do not blow your nose forcefully, sneeze with your mouth open, avoid efforts and immediate flights according to the instructions we give you. We prescribe antibiotic and painkiller therapy and remain in remote contact after returning to Italy, with the coordinator dedicated to Italian patients.
