html Dentist in Albania: is it safe? The honest answer
SD SanitadentalClinic · Tirana

Is going to the dentist in Albania safe? We answer seriously

Risks exist and we don't hide them. Here's how to recognize a serious clinic — and how we get checked ourselves.

If you're asking yourself this question, you're doing the right thing. The honest answer is: It depends on the clinic you choose. In Albania, as in every country where dental tourism has grown rapidly, there are excellent clinics and improvised clinics. We will never tell you "just trust": we will explain what the real risks are, how to check any clinic - including ours - and what guarantees we put in writing.

The real risks of the sector (yes, they exist)

It would be dishonest to deny it: the boom in dental tourism has also attracted unqualified operators. The problems you read about online — failed implants, quotes that change upon arrival, no assistance after returning — usually have specific causes:

  • Unauthorized clinics or doctors not registered with the Albanian Order of Doctors and Dentists;
  • Materials of uncertain origin: «compatible» or cloned implants, sold as if they were original;
  • Intermediaries, not clinics: agencies that collect patients and refer them to different practices, without direct responsibility;
  • Verbal estimates which then "grow" once you are already in Tirana;
  • No written guarantee and no follow-up after returning to Italy.

These problems are not "Albania": they are the symptom of a choice made without verification. And that's exactly what we help you do here.

How to check an Albanian clinic: checks you can do yourself

There is no need to trust advertising. Four checks are enough, all of which can be done from home:

  • Registration to the Order. Ask for the name of the responsible doctor and check the registration with the Albanian Order of Doctors and Dentists (Urdhri i Mjekët). If the clinic doesn't tell you who will treat you, that's a red flag.
  • Legal existence. Each regular clinic has a VAT number (NIPT) which can be verified for free on the public portal qkb.gov.al, the Albanian business register.
  • Traceable materials. Branded implants (Straumann®, Nobel Biocare®) have a certificate of authenticity with batch and serial number: the clinic must give it to you and record it on your report.
  • Written guarantee. It must be a signed document that states the term, what it covers, and what invalidates it — not a sentence on the site.

We have collected these and other controls in our 10-point checklist for choosing a clinic in Albania.

What we do, point by point

We don't ask you to take our word for it. This is what you can check about Sanitadental Clinic:

  • We are one real clinic in Tirana since 2014, not an agency: the responsible doctor is the Dr. Ledjo Kapaj;
  • Sterilization with cycle validated according to the standard EN 13060, the same request to Italian studios;
  • Implants Original Straumann® and Nobel Biocare®, with certificate of authenticity delivered to each patient; ceramics Ivoclar IPS e.max® for aesthetics;
  • Cone Beam CT included in the first visit: no implant is planned on a simple overview;
  • 10 year written guarantee on the systems and 5 years on prosthetics and veneers;
  • Quote signed within 24 hours and blocked for 30 days: the price you accept in Italy is the one you pay in Tirana;
  • Beyond 1,500 Italian patients well-kept, with an average rating 4.9/5 on more than 480 reviews.

If you want to better understand who we are and how we work, the page Who we are e How it works they tell the complete journey, from the x-ray to the follow-up.

What if something goes wrong after returning?

It's the most legitimate fear of all. This is why our relationship doesn't end at the airport: the remote follow-up it is part of the treatment plan. You have an Italian coordinator of reference, scheduled photo checks and, in cases covered by guarantee that require intervention, the return to the clinic is organized by us. Details are on the about page system guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Are Albanian dentists qualified?

Like everywhere, it depends on the individual professional. In Albania dentists are trained in the faculty of Dentistry and must be registered with the national Order. Many, like our team, have done specialization courses in Italy and Europe. Verifying registration with the Order is the first check to be done, always.

How do I know if the implants are original?

Ask for the manufacturer's certificate of authenticity: it reports the brand, model, batch and serial number of each system. We deliver it to each patient together with the report and attach it to the guarantee. If a clinic cannot provide it, the material is not traceable.

What happens if I find a different price upon arrival?

This doesn't happen with us: the estimate is signed, detailed item by item and blocked for 30 days. If a clinic only gives you an indicative price per message and reserves the right to "price on the spot", you are accepting a risk that you can avoid.

Are hygiene and sterilization at the same level as in Italy?

In serious clinics, yes. The reference is the European standard EN 13060 for steam sterilization, which we apply with validated and tracked cycles. It's a legitimate question to ask any clinic, in Albania or in Italy: if the answer is vague, look for another one.

Can I talk to a former Italian patient before deciding?

We understand this and, while respecting privacy, we can put you in touch with patients who have agreed to share their experience. In the meantime you can read the public reviews: over 480, with an average of 4.9/5.
